Inventor Stephen Whitman’s (Yes, The CANDYMAN Whitman) 1875 Patent Model for Casting Confectionery. November 16, 1875 Stephen F. Whitman of Philadelphia, PA is awarded Patent# 169,935 for a Machine for Casting Confectionery.

Whitman’s Confectionery Machine 

Whitman’s machine for manufacturing confectionery used a steam-filled box surrounding the body to heat the pre-molded batch which was to be poured into multiple vessels located on the top. The underside had funnel-shaped apertures where different types of molds could be attached to cast the confectionery. A lever controlled a sliding gate underneath to control several streams of material simultaneously.

In 1843, at the age of 19, a young Quaker named Stephen Whitman, set up a small “confectionery and fruiterer shoppe” close to the waterfront in Philadelphia, PA. He drew customers from all walks of life, but it was the sailors from the nearby wharf who provided Whitman with the imported fruits, nuts, cocoa, and flavorings from their travels. He incorporated all of these delicacies into his chocolate.

What Made Whitman Successful 

It was not only Whitman’s high quality ingredients and excellent product that fueled his success. Whitman was an excellent marketer. It was his presentation of the candy, as well as its taste, that kept customers coming back. He created beautiful packaging and well-crafted advertising campaigns for his product. His first newspaper advertisement appeared in 1860, just prior to the start of the Civil War.

Whitman developed great name recognition through the ads he placed in newspapers and magazines. Even today, his distinctive yellow box with the words Whitman’s Sampler and the cross-stitching design is easily recognizable. Whitman began his company selling individual chocolates, but in 1854, he introduced his first box of candies—“Whitman’s Choice Mixed Sugarplums” from Stephen F. Whitman. Packaged in a frilly pink container adorned with rosebuds and curlicues, it became the first packaged confection in a printed trademarked package. Sugarplums, at the time, referred to any candy, not just one type.

A True Candy Marketing Innovator 

Whitman was a businessman, an inventor, and a marketer. He invented the concept of prepackaged chocolate. Whitman’s success was due as much to his high-quality chocolates as to his innovative marketing sense. Not content with a small candy shop, Whitman expanded his business, even going so far as to patent the machine he designed to improve his candy production.

And as a testament to him, 160 years later, the Whitman name is still today synonymous with chocolate. Whitman Candies is today owned by Russell Stover Candies, Inc.

This is the reason Stephen Whitman’s patent model for casting confectionery stands the test of time.
